The Michigan Department of Transportation released its latest five-year transportation plan on Thursday, outlining which projects are now on tap after the State Transportation Commission authorized an additional $3.5 billion in bonding to do more projects at Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s direction.
The plan covers projects that will happen from 2020-2024. Its investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer-lasting roads and improved conditions for the state’s infrastructure, according to MDOT.
In a roundtable with reporters on Thursday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer stressed that bonding can’t fix all the roads -- through the State Transportation Commission, she can only issue bonds for roads under state, not local jurisdiction.
“I think there will be a lot of M-roads, and I-roads, US-roads will all be a part of this effort. My ability to impact every roadway is limited when it’s done unilaterally. If we want to address every local road, then the legislature has got to be a part of the funding solution,” Whitmer said.
She and lawmakers continue to disagree about what that long-term funding solution might look like.
While there is no long-term road funding plan, Whitmer did get approval for financing. New bonds will let her take on 122 additional state road projects over the next five years.
Here is an interactive map of the projects being moved up because of the bonding. You can rollover/click the lines (roads) and dots (bridges) to see details on type of work being done, and what year the project will begin and end. A black popup window after a click is a road project, a white is a bridge project.

To identify all projects in MDOT’s five-year-plan, use the searchable database below which lists all road and bridge projects, including a breakout on the Gordie Howe International Bridge project. The data details the location, structure and type of work, and the years within the time frame that planning and construction will occur.
In the database, the column “project status” identifies which projects exist already, and which are new or bonded. You can also filter by project status using the last search option in the database.
As far as how Whitmer prioritized which state roads to fix, she said, “The list of projects and maps I think show that we are going to start with the most severely-damaged roads traveled by the most number of people.”
