MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A bill in the Tennessee House of Representatives could bring a vital life skill into the classroom.
HB2818 focuses on bringing conflict resolution into schools for children in grades K-12.
One of the supporters who gave powerful testimony on why this bill is important was Whitehaven High School Principal Dr. Vincent Hunter.
“Our children need conflict resolution. Our children need someone to talk to them when they have no one at home to talk to them and mentor them,” he said.
He added that the last two years have been a challenge for educators and students alike, and it’s time to bring in more resources to help in every building.
“Our issue is not getting children to college. Our issue is that once children get to college, they cannot stick and stay. They do not have the skillset needed for conflict resolution and being able to channel the waters of a very terrible world.”
Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis also briefly talked about the importance of conflict resolution in a public forum Wednesday night at Kirby High School.
“If we can help our young people on the front end, then we wouldn’t need as many police officers as we do. If we invest more in our young people, then one day, we won’t have to invest as much in police departments, but we’ve got to do the work on the front end,” she said.
Memphis State Rep. Barbara Cooper is the sponsor of the bill. She said it’s important to give teachers the help they need.
“Every school would have someone on-site to take care of any kind of conflict that comes up, crisis that comes up, to take care of it in a timely manner,” Cooper said.
This bill goes to another house subcommittee next week.
Other Memphis representatives like Jesse Chism and Antonio Parkinson are listed as co-sponsors.
