President Cyril Ramaphosa is hoping to move beyond US allegations South Africa provided ammunition to Russia and departed from its non-aligned position on the Russian/Ukraine conflict by taking a front and centre role in peace talks between the two countries.
While the president detailed a pending peace mission with other African heads of state, his defence minister, Thandi Modise, and the Kremlin on Tuesday vehemently denied US Ambassador Reuben Brigety's claims South Africa supplied arms to Russia.
During a briefing where he hosted Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for an official state visit, Ramaphosa said on Tuesday Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, had agreed to receive a peace mission led by six African heads of state in both Moscow and Kyiv.
