Washington Park Farmer's Market to re-locate due to permit conflicts - WRGB

Farmer's market season is upon us this summer, dozens of vendors popped up their tents at the Guilderland Farmer's Market Sunday.

"It's really vital for us because we don't have a storefront, so this is kind of our storefront,” said Krista Ryder, Co-Owner of Remember the Flowers.

Vendors such as Remember the Flowers and Pet Pastels have taken part in the Washington Park Farmer's Market for several years- which occurs on Saturdays in the summer months.

Now, due to multiple permit events on the same days, the farmer's market is being forced to move out of the park for several dates this summer.

"We've been going back and forth, so he [Mayor’s Office] finally allowed me to have three different spaces,” said Scott Abraham, Director of Washington Park Farmers Market. “One was Hudson in between Willet and Lark Street, which we're too big for now, we have too many vendors so we'd be squished in, and it wouldn't be right. The other spot was down in the Warehouse District right next to Lost and Found."

Abraham runs multiple farmer's markets in the region, he says moving out of Washington Park for those dates could hurt vendors' business.

"You need continuity, if you move a farmers market one day and they come back and it's not there, they're going to be like what's up,” he added. “It's going to be harder for the vendors to keep that money."

Mayor Sheehan’s office sent CBS6 a statement stating:

“All of our parks - Washington Park included - are available to our entire community. We have approved special event permits for more than 80% of the dates requested by Scott Abraham and offered two alternative spaces in and around Washington Park for the three dates that conflict with other events more than two weeks ago. We await Scott's decision on which alternate location he chooses."

Vendors hope a solution can be reached, as business relies on this.

"Something has to happen so that it can keep going; for somebody like me it's a perfect venue,” said Gary Maggio, Owner of Pet Pastels.

"It's unfortunate because the park's not that small, so I feel like there's room for everybody, and I think it's really important to support small businesses,” Ryder added. “We're the powerhouses of the community. we buy stuff in the community, we sell stuff in the community, and we want to be part of the community."

Abraham says he’s working to decide which space to use for the specific dates, he must let the city know this week.
