The United States’ federal government has created a plan to combat the coronavirus that that prepares for the pandemic to “last 18 months or longer” and could have “multiple waves,” The New York Times reports.

What the plan says
- A lengthy pandemic could lead to widespread shortages for consumers and health care workers.
- The proposed plan would give state and local governments increased power to help combat the virus.
- The proposed 100-page plan would include a potential option to allow President Donald Trump “to take extraordinary action to force American industry to ramp up production of critical equipment and supplies such as ventilators, respirators and protective gear for health care workers,” according to The New York Times.
The pandemic could last for a long time
- The coronavirus pandemic might last longer than you think. Health experts suggest the closures and lockdowns used to “flatten the curve” might last for more than a year since the virus could return in the fall.
- In fact, Adam Kucharski, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, told Vox that people don’t understand that this pandemic could last through the year.
- Kucharski said: “I think this idea … that if you close schools and shut restaurants for a couple of weeks, you solve the problem and get back to normal life — that’s not what’s going to happen.”
- He said: “The main message that isn’t getting across to a lot of people is just how long we might be in this for.”
- He added: “This virus is going to be circulating, potentially for a year or two, so we need to be thinking on those time scales. There are no good options here. Every scenario you can think of playing out has some really hefty downsides. ... At the moment, it seems the only way to sustainably reduce transmission are really severe unsustainable measures.”
