Sheldon, Iowa — Everyone and every organization is responding to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation in their own way.
We asked Sheldon Community School District Superintendent Cory Myer about their response. He says the situation is a fluid one, and it’s changing more rapidly as time goes on.
(as above:)”The first thing I would emphasize is obviously we don’t want people to panic. We know this is a very serious issue but one that we want to make sure we have accurate information. We want to listen to our professionals and follow their guidance. And by professionals we’re talking about, you know, our public health officials, whether those are people at the county level or at the state level whether we’re talking about Sanford Medical, the CDC… any of those organizations that are just helping to provide good valuable information for us and so as a school district, we’re in constant communication with those individuals about what’s the best course of action for us as a school district. At this point in time, we have no immediate plans for short-term or extended school closure. And so any decisions that we would make in regard to that would be done only at the discretion of those public health officials that I mentioned earlier.”
Myer reminds us, however, that the policy is fluid, and could change depending on circumstances.
(As above:)”That absolutely could change, and we’re actually having some conversations with our students, with our staff and in talking about that preparation. We do want to make sure that we communicate that potential exists for a closure potentially at some point in time. And if that happens we want to make sure we give people as much notice as we can. We’re not sure how much that will or won’t be but we do want families to be prepared and have time to make plans in case that need would arise.”
