Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced a plan on Thursday for reopening bars, restaurants, barbershops and hair salons in the state.
DeWine, with input from Ohio lawmakers, convened several groups of local business owners to advise him on the best practices for reopening restaurants' dine-in locations, hair salons and other personal services.
"How we open up, how we do it, is so very, very important," DeWine said during the conference.
The plan stated:
- May 12: retail stores can open
- May 15: salons, barbershops, outside restaurants, bars and patios can open
- May 21: restaurants dine-in locations can open
Restaurants, bars
Restaurants and bars will be asked to create a floor plan that complies with social distancing standards. Under the current mandate, each party must not exceed 10 people. Each party will be separated by 6 feet or physical barriers.
Bars must follow the same guidelines as restaurants. As long as you have chairs and tables that can comply with social distancing guidelines, you are able to reopen.
Restaurateur Treva Weaver, who helped lead a task force that crafted the guidelines, suggested adding picnic tables and chairs to open spaces in bars in order to comply with social distancing standards.
Some of the changes announced included:
- Physical barriers could include plexiglass or high booth walls
- Customers may have to wait in cars before being seated
- Buffets will now be served to you
- Restaurants will list COVID-19 symptoms in entryways
- Most employees will be required to wear masks but some back of house employees will be exempt.
Plans to reopen these businesses will include hygiene and cleaning requirements. DeWine announced last week that retail stores could reopen but most employees at would need to wear masks while customers were not required to do so.
Customers might be asked to wear masks by the owner, said Weaver.
DeWine, through an Ohio Department of Health order, closed restaurants and bars to dine-in customers on March 15.
Salons, barbershops
Customers may have to wait in their car until the stylist or barber is ready, said Debbie Penzone, who helped lead the salon reopening task force.
There won't be magazines; stylists will wear masks and will probably ask customers to wear masks, she said. Some might make it mandatory, she said.
Customers must enter the salons alone unless you're a kid.
On March 23, Ohio's "stay-at-home" order took effect, forcing most retailers to close. Those providing food could remain open for carry-out and delivery.
On March 26, child care centers were closed to most children. Children of health care workers and first responders were permitted to attend child care centers but in smaller groups.
DeWine making a pitch to Ohioans to continue to social distance and wash hands. DeWine said, "Once we're started, we don't want to have to pull back."
