“A community destroyed,” reads a tagline in the trailer for a new documentary about a tiny neighborhood located just a hop away from Elon Musk’s SpaceX’s facilities in Southern Texas.
Airing tonight (Sept. 21) is “Vice Versa: Between Musk and Mars” (10 p.m., Vice TV). Producers tout it as an investigation of what happens when SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk “moves next door and brings his rockets with him.”
Musk, they say, is quietly staging a takeover of the tiny Texas retirement village of Boca Chica, where he hopes to launch his rockets, house his employees, build a simulated Mars village and eventually send 1 million people to Mars by 2050. In the process, they claim, he’s destroying a wildlife corridor and forcing the local retirees out of their homes and community.“I went from a nice, peaceful vacation home to a war zone,” says one resident.
“You must exit your home to avoid injury,” says another, reading from a warning notice sent to her.
On the other hand, Musk is also bringing jobs and diversifying the economy of one of the poorest counties in the United States.
“Between Musk and Mars” provides a look at the holdouts who refuse to leave the isolated village and the tactics SpaceX has been using to get them out of their homes. It’s a battle that was covered extensively in a story in The Atlantic earlier this year.
