On the night of August 27-28, a conflict between locals and Hasidic pilgrims who were not allowed to attend the burial place of spiritual leader Nachman broke out in Uman, Cherkasy Oblast. The deputy of the Uman district council Serhiy Alekseev reported about it on his Facebook page
"'Night assault’ of Uman by tourists,” Alekseev wrote.
A video posted by Alekseev shows locals preventing pilgrims from passing and urging them to leave. People demanded that the police expel the pilgrims, but the police explained that they could not prohibit the pilgrims from visiting the burial place of the tzaddik.
The United Jewish Community of Ukraine reported that it had analyzed the video of the conflict and concluded that it showed no signs of anti-Semitism and was of a property nature.
As we reported earlier, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov Charitable Foundation urged President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to make a decision that meets the interests of the citizens who want to hold pilgrimage to Uman city.
“We thank Volodymyr Zelensky that he understands the importance for dozens of thousands of Hasidim of pilgrimage to Uman city during the celebration of Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year. At the same time, we urge to make the right decision, which would meet the interests of Ukrainian and foreign citizens from all over the world who want to visit Ukraine for pilgrimage in Uman city,” President of The Rabbi Nachman of Breslov Charitable Foundation Ben-Noon Natan said.
