Full Blown Conflict in East Med Seen as Unlikely, Unless by Accident - Balkan Insight

Amid a deepening military standoff over energy riches in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared last week that Ankara was willing to pay a price, but would “make others pay when necessary.”

The bellicose rhetoric coupled with diplomatic and military manoeuvring between Greece and Turkey has raised fears of full-blown conflict over oil and gas discoveries in disputed waters off Cyprus and the Greek islands of Crete and Kastellorizo.

Analysts, however, say military conflict remains unlikely.

“Both parties prefer talking but they’d rather do it from a position of strength,” said Dimitar Bechev, a senior research fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington.
