Bidwell Park and Playground Commission to consider vegetation plan - Chico Enterprise-Record

CHICO — The City of Chico Bidwell Park and Playground Commission will consider public feedback regarding the first draft of the Vegetative Fuels Management Plan during its meeting Monday night.

The commission will consider public comments about the plan that applies to Bidwell Park, city greenways and open spaces. The report will be presented by Linda Herman, the park and natural resources manager. The goal of the plan is to reduce catastrophic wildfire risk to Chico residents, homes and businesses, and to reduce or reverse the negative effects of long-term fire suppression.

The commission will consider final approval of the implementation projects identified in the plan.

The meeting takes place at 6 p.m. Monday and will be held remotely via the WebEx platform. It will not be televised on Comcast Channel 11.

The commission will also consider a proposed revised policy regarding water quality testing for Sycamore Pool in lower Bidwell Park.

Emailed public comments will be accepted with the subject line, “public comment item,” and then the item wished to be discussed. Send all emails to parkpubliccomment@chicoca.gov during the meeting or prior to the close of public comment on an item. The public is encouraged not to send more than one email per item and not to comment on numerous items in one email. Comments will be limited to three minutes or as determined by the chair.

The names of the people submitting the email will be read aloud, but not the email itself. However, emails will become part of the public record and available to the public for review after the meeting.

WebEx participants may view the meeting remotely by visiting chico.webex.com/chico and using the event number 146 833 5376 and password BPPC31! (case sensitive). The public may also participate by calling 1-844-517-1442 and using the password 146 833 5376.

It has been requested that the following items be agendized for the next meeting. A majority vote of the commission will be needed for the items to be discussed at a future meeting. If agendized, public comment will be taken at that later meeting.

  • Designate all of Bidwell Park as a playground.
  • Revise noise ordinance to ban amplified sound in Bidwell Park and other city parks.
  • Establish a Code of Conduct for City parks and greenways.
  • Provide a phone number for the public to report incidents in the parks and greenways.
  • Enhance enforcement with private security or the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Consider developing Lost Park near City Parking Lot 5 as a river walk recreation area or other revenue opportunity.
  • Address potential fire hazards in lower Bidwell Park, Lindo Channel and on Humboldt Avenue along Little Chico Creek due to encampments.
