SOMSD Puts Forth Plan to Address Emotional Health During Pandemic - TAPinto.net

MAPLEWOOD/SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The South Orange-Maplewood School District is taking substantial action to address the emotional wellbeing of students as they learn to cope and adjust with all the changes the pandemic has forced.

The district is launching the SOMSD Care Line — 973-762-5600, ext. 1850 — where members of the SOMSD community can leave a voicemail describing their reason for calling. A social work intern will return the call within 24 hours to offer a consultation and/or a referral.

In the virtual schedule released in the same plan each grade level has time set aside each day individual or small group conferencing. This is in compliance with ‘The Road Back’ plan from the N.J. Dept. of Education which suggests “opportunities for staff and students to regularly practice and reflect on their social and emotional competencies.”

Outside the daily check-ins students will have access to emotional support from the district's counselors. Elementary schools offer a social work program for students in an individual and group setting. The CDC recommends these types of conversation starters for younger children especially who respond to stress differently than adults.

At the middle and high schools the guidance counselors will be available to students for individual counseling as they would be during a normal school year. Guidance counselors will also be able to refer students to social work intern programs, an outside therapist and other services. Students with IEPs will have access to their case managers who can help them to formulate a plan for success and also provide referrals.

The Parenting Center and SOMSD PTAs will be hosting a crisis support speaker series of experts to talk about how to discuss different social, emotional and academic issues with children during this time. The series will run from September 15 to November 17 with 5 different speakers and 6 events total.
