LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A group of Republican state representatives are expected to announce their COVID-19 response plan for the state.

Michigan House Republicans say their plan will be data-driven and will “empower Michigan’s public health and medical experts to meet the needs of their local communities in a safe and more precise way based on publicly disclosed data.”

On Monday, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, spoke at a hearing at the capitol before the COVID-19 oversight committee.

There has been recent talk about herd immunity as schools all over the country gradually move back to the classroom.

Dr. Khaldun says for herd immunity to work, 80 percent of the people living in Michigan need to get the virus. Both Dr. Khaldun and Dr. Anthony Fauci say isn’t a reasonable option.

“That’s inhumane. We can’t let six million additional Michiganders get infected by the disease," Dr. Khaldun said. "We can’t have an additional 30,000 Michiganders die, as a strategy for herd immunity.”

Fauci appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America program and echoed the same sentiment.

“There will be so many people in the community that you can’t shelter, that you can’t protect, who are going to get sick, and get serious consequences," Dr. Fauci added. "So this idea that we have the power to protect the vulnerable is total nonsense.”
