A project is underway on the west side of Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara to reduce pedestrian-cyclist conflict along the heavily trafficked beachway.
“Pedestrians and cyclists do not always mix well,” said Jessica Grant, supervising transportation planner for the City of Santa Barbara. “Santa Barbarans and tourists experience this challenge on the city’s waterfront beachway. Mixing cyclists and pedestrians on this pathway can result in safety conflicts.”
The Stearns Wharf Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety Improvement Project is a Vision Zero project aimed at keeping pedestrians and cyclists separated and reducing conflict points. Safety improvements will be made from the beachway at Skater’s Point off of Cabrillo Boulevard along to the entrance to Stearns Wharf.
The project includes a reconstruction of the sidewalks and the beachway around the Stearns Wharf restroom that would reorient the beachway toward the ocean on the northeast side of the Stearns Wharf crosswalk.
A new pedestrian-only crosswalk will be installed on the northwest side of the existing shared crosswalk, and a pervious sidewalk will be built at an angle that connects the wharf sidewalk to the Cabrillo sidewalk, according to Grant.
Pedestrians are encouraged to use the Cabrillo sidewalk, and green bicycle stenciling will be painted on the beachway to encourage cyclists to use that path.
The project also involves new signage, the addition of bike racks, and landscaping improvements. Two concrete connections between the skate park’s sidewalk and the beachway will be removed and replaced with turf.
The project began Tuesday and is expected to be complete by early February.
