The City of Albuquerque, in partnership with New Mexico First, invites the public to weigh in on draft goals and strategies for the 2021 Albuquerque Climate Action Plan. Over the last several months, community members on the Albuquerque Climate Action Task Force prepared draft goals and strategies for the 2021 Albuquerque Climate Action Plan, using public input from the Albuquerque Climate Survey released in summer 2020. Now residents have a chance to give input on these recommendations before they are formally adopted into the plan.
Residents are invited to complete an online survey and attend a virtual public comment meeting. The survey can be accessed in English at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/STRATEGIESCABQ and in Spanish at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RECOMENDACIONESCABQ. The surveys will be open from February 8 to February 26. Virtual public comment meetings will be held on February 17 from noon until 2:00 p.m., and on February 18 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. To sign up for the public comment meetings in English or Spanish, please register at https://cabq-pc-english.eventbrite.com or https://cabq-pc-spanish.eventbrite.com.
“This climate action planning process has been centered on equity and led by community,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The Climate Action Plan will build on our big gains for sustainability and lay out the path to a cleaner, healthier, more equitable Albuquerque.”
Lilly Irvin-Vitela, President and Executive Director of New Mexico First, described the Climate Action Task Force’s accomplishment. “This task force of committed people brings considerable knowledge and perspective to the task of learning and sharing their own wisdom to build just and durable recommendations to manage climate change. Our neighbors across Albuquerque have opportunities throughout February to weigh in and help strengthen the plan. Together communities can address the challenges with creativity, wisdom, and a commitment to fairness and equity.”
Albuquerque Climate Action Task Force member Josue De Luna Navarro shared "The City of Albuquerque is positioning itself to be a leader in climate justice by making sure frontline communities' input is being prioritized as the city commits to addressing the climate crisis in the next decades."
Public comments from the survey and virtual meetings will be shared with task force members as they finalize goals and strategies to include in the 2021 Albuquerque Climate Action Plan planned for release on Earth Day 2021. This climate planning initiative comes about after a call to action from “City Resolution R 19-187 Declaring a Climate Emergency” in September 2019 and calling for an update of the 2009 Climate Action Plan.
Planning around climate change and setting community objectives will build off and strengthen the City’s work to date on sustainability, including the many objectives to transition to clean transportation and renewable energy through participation in the Bloomberg Philanthropies American Cities Climate Challenge.
