The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Industrial and Labor Relations is a master’s degree awarded by Cornell University. The MPS in Conflict Resolution, Ithaca Campus, draws upon the strengths of Cornell’s Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution. The institute trains more students in mediation and arbitration than any other school in the United States. Its world-class faculty conducts research that addresses critical issues in conflict resolution, and its findings often influence public policy. The Institute is known worldwide for its expertise in teaching, research and organizational consulting in the field of conflict resolution – with a special focus on workplace disputes. The Institute is part of Cornell’s ILR School - the preeminent educational institution in the world, focused on work, employment and labor.
Program Structure
- The program consists of two full time semesters in residence on Cornell’s Ithaca campus.
- Students complete 30 required course credits, including an eight-credit capstone project, developed under the guidance of a faculty advisor.
- Both a faculty advisor and a practitioner mentor provide students with advice and mentoring throughout the program.
- The eight-credit capstone project could include field-based studies, case studies or more traditional academic research.

Enrollees will be required to have 8 years of post-bachelor degree work experience.

The MPS degree is designed to meet the demands of experienced professionals from a broad range of careers who seek an intellectual challenge and a distinguished credential. Prospective students might be working in human resources, labor relations, the labor movement, law, or consulting, as public sector managers, or as senior administrators of nonprofit organizations.
MPS students bring a variety of perspectives that makes for a rigorous and provocative learning environment, but they share a determination to take on the critical issues that impact today’s employment relationships and the ever-changing world of work.
Faculty
The Scheinman Institute combines the academic depth of faculty in conflict/dispute resolution, employee relations, diversity and inclusion, and labor relations with the practical knowledge of leading practitioners in the field to provide intensive skill development for individuals, and best practices for organizations.
The institute’s mandate includes translating what is taught in the classroom and learned through research into resources for the workplace.

The MPS Program in Conflict Resolution, Ithaca Campus, is currently seeking students for the fall of 2021. Application deadline for the fall of 2021 is June 1, 2021.
Students are accepted into the MPS program by application through the Cornell Graduate School. The admissions committee looks for applicants with a strong academic background as well as a proven record of professional work experience. We welcome applicants with a range of undergraduate majors and previous graduate degrees, and we look to bring together a cohort of students who have taken diverse career paths. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and 8 years of professional experience to be considered for admission. Admissions decisions are made by informed judgment, not formulas.
