A majority of Los Angeles residents believe that their city will experience a new outbreak of racial conflict, according to a poll. The survey by the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University found that 68 percent of respondents expected that “other riots and disturbances will occur … in the next five years.” The survey is conducted after five years, since the 1992 riots. The percentage of Angelenos worried about a revival of conflict had been dropping steadily, but the latest survey shows the highest degree of pessimism since 1997, reported the Los Angeles Times.
Observers say the poll results reflect a nationwide trend. “People feel unease about race across the nation,” said UCLA history professor Brenda Stevenson, an expert in African American history. “They realize that the country is in an awkward situation in regards to race.” The survey showed nearly 40 percent of residents believe race relations in Los Angeles have worsened over the last four years. White residents were the most likely to say the city’s ethnic groups get along well. Asian Americans were most likely to say they do not.
