Readers respond: Escape from political conflict - OregonLive

Thank you for publishing Amanda Ripley’s opinion piece (“These are scary times, but that should come as no surprise,” Nov. 2). What I found meaningful and important is that while acknowledging our dangerous political environment, she offers practical, non-partisan, hopeful solutions.

Ms. Ripley refers to a state of high conflict where we get stuck in self-destructive behaviors. “High Conflict” is the title of her informative and well-researched book that offers many stories, insights and solutions. She tells us that the methods of escaping high conflict are known and offers us this: Ask politicians to pledge not to dehumanize their opponents. Then hold them to it. And celebrate and normalize this behavior.

Instead of allowing the conflict mongers to manipulate us, we can “demand something radically different, something that will enable us to coexist.” One simple step we can all take is to regularly call or write to our legislators to call out destructive behavior and applaud constructive engagement.
