German-American cultural group aims to recreate iconic Chicago Brauhaus

DANK Haus, the North Side’s active German-American cultural group, is raising funds in the hope of recreating Lincoln Square’s iconic Chicago Brauhaus, which closed in 2017 after 52 years, according to Block Club Chicago. The DANK Haus German American Cultural Center has raised more than $4,500 thus far on a GoFundMe and plans to use pieces from the original Brauhaus (including doors, chandeliers, and its well-known red bar) on the second floor of its center at 4740 N. Western Avenue. That space is commonly used for private events to complement the rooftop which offers gorgeous views of the city skyline.

Carnitas Urupan owner among local immigrants sustaining urban heartland economies

A Reuters report explored American “heartland states,” including Illinois, which have shown a tendency to lean on immigrant business owners in urban areas with struggling economies. That includes Pilsen, home of Marcos Carbajal of Eater 38 mainstay Carnitas Urupan. Carbajal, who earned an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, left a career at Northern Trust Bank to bolster his father’s Michoacán restaurant in Pilsen. Carbajal spoke with the news service about his family’s restaurant. The business has since expanded to a second location and they’re considering a third. The article cites a 2017 report from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, which found that many heartland cities depend on immigration for population stability and that “the foreign-born now play a critical role in offsetting regional workforce gaps.”

Starbucks ditches reusable cups to help stem spread of coronavirus

And finally, baristas at Starbucks locations, including the mammoth Mag Mile Reserve Roastery, are no longer refilling personal cups and won’t use “for here” ceramic drinkware in efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19, executive vice president Rossann Williams announced in a statement on the company website last week. According to the Tribune, Starbucks stores will honor the 10-cent discount for customers who bring in a personal cup or want a refillable vessel, but patrons should still expect to get a paper coffee cup.
