On second thought, please don’t test us after all.
Congressional leaders turned down the Trump administration’s plan to install three rapid-result COVID-19 testing machines on Capitol Hill in time for the Senate’s return to work on Monday.
“Congress is grateful for the Administration’s generous offer,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wrote in a joint letter Saturday, Politico reported. “Congress wants to keep directing resources to the front-line facilities where they can do the most good the most quickly.”
The rejection capped two days of press criticism after congressional physician Dr. Brian Monahan told the leaders that he would be unable to administer frequent coronavirus tests to legislators and staffers — even though the White House has been giving rapid tests to everyone who comes in close contact with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
The stories drew a tart Trump tweet Saturday morning that announced his plans to give Congress the same technology.
