Missouri School Administrators looking at MSBA's initial reopening plan - WGEM

If you're a parent you're probably worried about when your kids will be able to get back into schools.

In Missouri, the School Boards' Association has a new nearly hundred page long initial plan.

School administrators at Lewis County C-1 schools said if and when they do reopen, something as simple as having lunch in the lunchroom is something they won't be able to do right away.

"There's just things that you're not going to think of that really you need to think of and I think that this document is going to help with a case-scenario type planning for schools," said Superintendent John French.

He said those scenarios include things like social distancing in classrooms, eliminating group activities like band or gym, and limiting people on school buses.

French said while some of those things are achievable, others would require hiring more staff, adding classrooms, or buying more equipment.

"Some of those things are if that is really how things have to be because we're in worst case scenario, we will still be in a situation where we won't be able to have kids at school," said French.

Lewis County C-1 technology director Susan Moore said one way to tackle some of those issues is through online learning material and classrooms.

"We've done a lot of professional development on many different things in our google platform, but that was one thing that we really didn't ever cover because we're all here together," said Moore.

She also said despite that, it isn't a one size fits all solution.

"Some of those students can't participate in those google meets with their teachers and they're kinda missing out on some things that are happening," said Moore.

French said as summer school approaches, they're looking at doing alternating classes every other day to address these issues.

"Our concept would be as long as we can get those students in our classrooms that we can download assignments and activities onto chrome books that they could take home and work on off-line," said French.

He said they're hoping that in the coming weeks, that summer school could work as a sort of testing ground for social distancing practicing they may have to implement in the normal school year.

French said he's asking for parents interested in the summer school program to reach out to the district to help them gauge interest.
