ASD lays out plan to reopen for the new school year - KTUU.com

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Anchorage School District rolled out its plan for the upcoming school year to the public on Thursday, highlighting the district’s priorities, process and plan for the future, with a school start date scheduled for August 20.

“There is no one perfect answer of how to do school next year,” said ASD Superintendent Dr. Deena Bishop. “A good plan is a nimble plan, especially in these times. We must be nimble and flexible.”

District leaders laid out several options for the return of students and staff to schools, which included different setups for different scenarios. In a high-risk situation, for example, the district is prepared to operate under an online-only system.

For now, the district said, school will start out in a two-day model, where some students attend on one day and others attend on another. Younger students, for example. will be divided by alphabetical order and will got to school 5.5 hours per day during the medium low-risk and medium high-risk categories, which is what is currently projected.

“We are going to enter into this slow roll-in of the plan,” Bishop said. “We do understand starting school in a different way will be problematic in different ways, and our plan is nimble to address those.”

If all goes well, those schools will move to a low-risk model in which classes would be attended five days a week, utilizing what’s called a cohort model.

“A cohort model is going to have students remain with their teacher for the school day, for the entirety of their time, whether they’re having lunch at recess, they will be separated in their bubble group if you will and not interact and intermingle," Bishop said.

Students will also remain with their teacher for the school day for the entirety of the time, Bishop said, separated in their own “bubble group.” Specialists will be assigned to grade level.

“This way, we are mitigating interactions of students at a wide range, primarily to keep students and staff healthy and to understand contact between them,” she said.

The high school mode is a cohort quarter model, so that students, parents and guardians won’t have to juggle half a dozen courses at a time. The district is also offering a new virtual online program that will allow families to maintain enrollment.

The district is also strongly advocating a requirement that masks or cloth face coverings be worn by everyone in schools and administrative buildings. It's one of several safety measures that will be put into place along with social distancing, proper hygiene and building sanitization.

As for the fall sports season, that is expected to begin in late July, with cameras being added in gyms and stadiums to reduce crowd sizes while still providing an opportunity to spectate. High school fall sports are scheduled to begin July 29, with some added measures in place to help reduce the chance of exposure to the COVID-19 virus.

The next ASD School Board meeting will take place July 21.
