The Neshaminy School Board approved their health and safety plan in advance of the upcoming school year.

The board unanimously agreed on Tuesday evening to approve the plan that comes as the district looks to make a decision in August on how or if in-person classes will resume amid the pandemic.

The meeting, which was held at the auditorium at Maple Point Middle School in Middletown Township, was the board’s first in-person gathering since COVID-19 mitigation measures stepped up in March.

The plan for the district calls for increased cleaning of high-touch surfaces, water fountains will be closed, lunchroom tables will be cleaned between student groups, shared materials will be sanitized, hand sanitizer will be available in common areas, high-touch areas on buses will be cleaned between runs, and classroom surfaces will be cleaned nightly.

Additionally, the plan talks of plexiglass barriers to be installed and masks and facemasks to be used on buses, hallways, and when in close proximity and in line with the state public health orders.

In mid-August, the school board will vote on a plan for reopening schools. The district is considering a full traditional in-school plan, every other day schedule, full-time online instruction, and opt-out plan for families who don’t feel comfortable with the other plans.

In a recent parent survey, the largest number preferred a traditional in-school schedule for students with a rotation schedule favored second. All online classes were least favored.

“Neshaminy is ready,” School Board President Steve Pirritano said. “We will not fail these children.”

Superintendent Dr. Rob McGee said he will keep parents and the community in the loop on progress and how students will return to classes.

Also during the meeting, the school board decided to move forward with a plan to look at upgrading filtering and other capabilities for the district’s HVAC systems.

Damion Spahr, of SitelogIQ, which was formerly Reynolds Energy Services, told the school board that numerous improvements can be explored for schools. The improvements included increasing filtering, the level of outside air, bi-polar ionization, and ultra-violet germicidal irradiation.

At their August meeting, the board could vote to move ahead with a more specific plan from SitelogIQ.

If upgrades are approved, the work could be done by December, Spahr said.
