UPDATE: PSD released its plan to start the school in a hybrid in-person, at-home format and push back its start date by one week.
ORIGINAL STORY: Parents, teachers, students and employers will learn Monday what Poudre School District is planning for the reopening of schools this fall.
The district had not made any announcement about plans for the upcoming school year as of 1 p.m., but a district spokeswoman confirmed they would do so by the end of the day.
In an email to union members from Poudre Education Association, Vice President John Robinson said though they've had several meetings with PSD Cabinet members, they have not been fully briefed on the tentative plan that will be released Monday.
"PEA is only in support of buildings opening for in person instruction if it is safe and healthy for our members and students," Robinson's email said.
He asked teachers to review the plan once it's released and share their thoughts with union representatives, who will make sure the PSD Board of Directors and administrators hear their position.
SCHOOL BUS RESTRICTIONS: Due to coronavirus, most Poudre School District students likely can't take the bus this fall
The district said last week it would share a tentative opening schedule and 2020-21 comprehensive school year plan Monday, with the caveat that the district may still have to change opening plans based on public health conditions closer to the start of the school year.
On Monday, PSD spokeswoman Madeline Noblett would not confirm when the decision would be released but said it would be Monday.
A decision could answer whether learning will be in person, remote or a hybrid of the two. The district is also offering a virtual learning option. The enrollment deadline for PSD Virtual has been extended to Aug. 8.
If the district sticks to its original schedule, Aug. 17 would be the first day for most students, with an Aug. 14 transition day for sixth- and ninth-grade students.
GRADUATION: Congrats, graduates. Here are some photos, video from the big day
The district has prepared for four possible phases to begin the year:
- Phase 1: Schools are closed. Instruction is carried out remotely. This is how PSD ended the 2019-20 year after closing in March due to the spread of COVID-19.
- Phase 2: Limited in-person learning, with gatherings of 10 people or less. Most learning would be remote, but there could be limited in-person interaction in small groups.
- Phase 3: Hybrid model. Students are broken into "A" and "B" groups, with A in classrooms Monday and Wednesday and B in classrooms Tuesday and Thursday. Friday would be a day for at-home learning and teacher collaboration.
- Phase 4: All students in school all day. The district may limit classrooms to 20-25 people and would likely require health safety measures such as temperature checks, contact tracing and the use of personal protective equipment.
A PSD survey in May with nearly 12,000 responses found 70% of parents and guardians were comfortable with students returning to school with social distancing in place, 7% were not comfortable with students returning and 23% said they might be comfortable with the return of students.
