CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A draft fall reopening plan delivered to the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school board contains options for parents, including a possible five-day in-person option for grades K-5.
The plan states the district is exploring that option by assessing the amount of space in school buildings, and that it would be for “interested parents.” That is one of four “instructional models” listed in the plan.
Others include a schedule that would create two groups for K-12 children coming to school, and rotate throughout the week. Students would each have two in-person days. A fully virtual day would separate the two groups coming to school. Pre-K students would go to classrooms four days a week.
The other two options are fully remote models. One would involve the student participating in scheduled classes with a bell schedule and CH-UH teachers, but fully online. The other is a full online schooling option, where students would be able to work on lessons on their own schedule and connect with teachers and classmates digitally.
In a district survey of parents, nearly 37 percent were not comfortable returning to in-person learning this fall. Approximately 63 percent responded either “moderately comfortable” or “completely comfortable,” according to the presentation.
The district is developing a face covering plan for students, per the state’s guidelines released last week. Students would need to bring masks from home, according to the presentation, though there would be some masks for those who forget or don’t have one.
Staff will wear face shields, made by Heights High engineering teacher Greg Nachman. Staff and teachers are required by the state to wear face coverings.
You can see the full presentation on the district’s website.
