DIA hires national firm to lead development of diversity, equity, inclusion plan - Crain's Detroit Business

The Detroit Institute of Arts has hired a neutral, national consulting firm to lead the museum's efforts to improve diversity, inclusion and accessibility.

The move comes less than two months after an anonymous group of past and current DIA employees called for DIA Director Salvador Salort-Pons' dismissal, claiming he lacks knowledge of race and diversity issues and ignores the contributions of people of color.

The museum said Thursday it has engaged Chicago-based Kaleidoscope Group to lead the museum's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility project, with funding from a grant made by the Institute for Museum and Library Sciences to the DIA last year.

Kaleidoscope was selected by a team of DIA employees from departments including curatorial, guest sales, evaluation and protection services, the museum said.

Kaleidoscope will begin its three-year effort this month with an organizational needs assessment and inclusion survey to develop a plan with specific metrics to guide the museum moving forward. The assessment will include a review of policies, procedures and practices, executive alignment, focus groups and interviews with employees, and a data review, with a summary report and recommendations to be delivered in November, the DIA said in a release.

The museum said it also plans to hire a full-time director to lead its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts on an ongoing basis.

The IDEA project is part of a museumwide initiative that began in 2015, through efforts including increased diversification of the board of directors, acquisitions of art by Black artists and paid internships to expand access to the museum industry, the DIA said.

"As our nation's attention has been drawn to inequity and systemic racism over the past several months, it is critical that we move forward with the internal work that needs to be conducted," Salort-Pons, said in a release.

"The next step for real growth and change is to apply and permeate this internal learning throughout our governance, programming, exhibitions, and overall visitor experience."
