SVVSD school board hears hybrid learning plan update - Longmont Times-Call

The St. Vrain Valley school board heard a short update on the plan for a hybrid learning model with students getting the option of returning to school in person two days a week starting Oct. 5.

District officials announced the move from remote-only learning to a hybrid at a Monday virtual community meeting. Boulder County Public Health has signed off on the plan, saying the current surge in coronavirus cases has, so far, generally been confined to the University of Colorado Boulder.

In response to community questions about why the district didn’t start the school year with a hybrid model, Superintendent Don Haddad said the district wanted a “full endorsement and support from the county health department.”

Other factors included waiting to see how in-person learning went in other school districts and setting up free testing for employees, he said. Out of about 1,200 staff member tests this month, only two came back positive for COVID-19, he said. The cost to the district to provide the tests this month was about $300,000.

Another advantage, he said, is students and teachers had time to get comfortable with remote learning, making it easier for them to go remote if they’re required to quarantine when there’s a probable or confirmed case.

“We will most likely see that and anticipate that,” Haddad said. “I anticipate there will be some challenging times ahead as we continue to navigate this.”

Before the first day of in-person classes, kindergarten, sixth and ninth graders will have an opportunity to attend a half-day school orientation program on Oct. 2.

For the hybrid, K-8 students will be split into two groups, with one group attending in person Mondays and Wednesdays and the other group attending in person Tuesdays and Thursdays. High school students, also split into two groups, will attend in person on either Mondays and Tuesdays or Wednesdays and Thursdays.

On alternate days, when students aren’t physically in school, they will attend live classes remotely with their classroom and complete independent work. Fridays will be a day for all students to finish assignments, ask questions during office hours and, for some students who need extra help, attend in-person sessions with a teacher.

Preschool, where class sizes are already low, will follow a regular schedule. Students who receive special education services may attend four days a week in person.

Safety measures include requiring masks inside — with breaks during the day — for all grade levels, social distancing, no large group gatherings, increased cleaning overnight and during the day, upgrades to HVAC systems and free testing provided to staff members through October and longer “if necessary.” Student not able to wear a mask to school will need to remain in fully-remote learning.

District officials said students will be spaced apart “to the fullest distance possible in classrooms.” They will attend specials or electives on a regular schedule, but there will be less sharing of equipment and materials. They will eat lunch in the school cafeteria, with 10th through 12th graders allowed to leave campus for lunch with parent permission.

Families who need transportation are asked to register by Friday to request busing. Priority will be given to special education students while other students will be accommodated as space allows based on health department restrictions.

Families who aren’t comfortable having their students return in-person can still enroll in the district’s online school, St. Vrain LaunchED Virtual Academy. About 2,800 students have enrolled in LaunchED so far, Haddad said.
