Bowling column: Don't plan too far ahead as we approach a new year - Times Union

When you're dealing with the COVID-19 era, the best-laid plans may be none at all.

We're 3½ weeks from the end of the year, and the PBA still doesn't have a 2021 schedule released. There are a lot of moving parts, including the collaboration with Fox television and travel considerations for international players.

We're closing in on four months since New York State centers reopened, but proprietors and bowlers are holding their collectives breaths with the recent spike in COVID cases. Most of the area leagues that chose to start up seem to be doing all right, and tournament fields seem to be stronger than ever, but is there another stoppage on the horizon?

Let's hope not, but be ready to adjust.

The current mandate, which orders bowling centers that have liquor licenses to close by 10 p.m., is set to expire Saturday. Does that mean proprietors can stay open later?

It is more than likely that the order will be extended, and that may be a best-case scenario. The dark cloud of centers being ordered to close again hovers over every tournament, league and birthday party.

So the message here is to be smart. If you're still bowling, wear a mask, practice social-distancing and don't plan too far ahead.

The 2021 USBC Senior Queens and International Golden Ladies, both scheduled for March in Las Vegas, have been canceled because of local and state regulations in Nevada and ongoing concerns surrounding COVID-19 pandemic. Both will look to return in 2022. … The USBC scrapped its 2021 convention and annual meeting, set for April 26-29 in Lombard, Ill., in favor of a virtual gathering because of public health concerns and frequently changing restrictions. The “PBA League All-Star Clash,” a taped event that ran Nov. 29 on Fox, drew 1.353 million viewers. While it’s a 9 percent drop from last year’s “PBA Clash,” the number shows the power of programming running adjacent to a live NFL game. For comparison's sake, the 2020 live Tournament of Champions telecast — bowled pre-pandemic, in February — garnered an audience of 1.46 million, the largest non-NFL-adjacent PBA audience since 2010.
