CALVERT COUNTY, Maryland -- Calvert County Commissioner Kelly McConkey received a letter of censure from the Calvert County Ethics Commission for voting on an issue that involved property he owned.

Back in August of 2019, he voted to expand the boundaries of the Huntingtown Town Center. That expansion included two properties owned by McConkey.

The Ethics Commission says that created a classic case of conflict of interest. The letter, signed by three members of the committee, warns McConkey that he could be fined $2500 if he violates ethics standards again.

Two Calvert County residents filed complaints against the commissioner over the vote.

McConkey argued that the complaints against him were invalid because the residents did not sign them and that Ethics Commission Chair Jennifer Mazur should have recused herself from the proceedings. The committee rejected both arguments.

TheBayNet reached out to Commissioner McConkey for comment but we have not yet heard back from him.
