MHSAA says it’s ready to meet Friday to make new plan for fall and winter sports - mlive.com

The Michigan High School Athletic Association appears to be ready to make a new set plans for the future of what’s left of the fall season and the entirety of the winter sports season.

In an email to state athletic directors, MHSAA executive director Mark Uyl said the representative council will meet on Friday morning to create plans for moving forward beyond the scheduled end of the high school sports pause on Dec. 20.

“The MHSAA has been pushing daily for updated information from the Governor’s office and MDHHS regarding plans for school sports following the expiration of the current emergency orders on December 20,” Uyl wrote.

“It appears we will have information so decisions can be finalized and shared very soon. We have confirmed our Representative Council meeting for tomorrow morning, December 18 and we will be communicating with schools immediately following this meeting with the next set of updated details and plans.

“I realize the waiting game has been beyond frustrating for all of us over the past month.  We simply have no other options other than to wait on those government and health department offices making all current activity and gathering decisions.

“You will hear from us immediately following tomorrow morning’s Council meeting.

“Thank you.”

High school sports in Michigan have been suspended by the MHSAA since Nov. 15 in compliance with orders from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to “pause” youth sports, among other things.

The pause interrupted the state tournaments for football, girls volleyball and girls swimming & diving. It also stopped the start of the winter sports season in its tracks and has since canceled numerous competitions within all winter sports.

The pause was issued in hopes of slowing the spread of the state’s most prominent wave of coronavirus infections since the beginning of the pandemic. Although Michigan surpassed the grim mark of 11,000 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday, the state is currently averaging 4,507 new cases and 115 new deaths over the last seven days. Two weeks ago, the state reported 6,917 cases and 92 deaths per day.
