Evers approves Wisconsin National Guard plan - WQOW TV News 18

MADISON, Wis. (WXOW) - A plan to improve changes to the way the Wisconsin National Guard handles sexual assault and harassment complaints is approved by Governor Tony Evers.

Last December, Evers ordered the guard to create the plan in the wake of allegations that officers downplayed reports of sexual assault and harassment and punished people who reported the incidents.

The investigations that resulted from the allegations led to the resignation of the then head of the guard, Major General Donald Dunbar.

The plan, according to the governor's office, will implement 21 recommendations made in a report from the National Guard Bureau's Office of Complex Investigations. It is designed to ensure proper reporting, investigation, accountability, and support for survivors.

“There is still much work to be done to ensure that our service members are safe and supported while carrying out their mission, but we are taking important steps to implement needed reforms,” said Gov. Evers in a statement. “The corrective action plan that the Wisconsin National Guard has developed will help us implement the top-to-bottom changes needed to ensure a safe workplace in the Guard, one that is free of sexual assault and harassment and the fear they might face retaliation for reporting sexual assault or harassment when it happens.”

The changes recommended in the report begin now with completion set for the end of August.
