Last chance to comment on Anchorage's 20-year transportation plan - KTUU.com

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) The Municipality is finalizing its plan for the next two decades of transportation projects.

“It's called the Metropolitan Transportation Plan, and it's looking at all the different kinds of transportation improvements we can do in the city in the next 20 years," said Municipal Transportation and Planning Manager Craig Lyon.

The plan is something the city releases every four year, and the public comment period on this one ends March 9, so you still have a chance to make your voice heard. Tuesday night, the Anchorage assembly will have a public hearing on the plan, and you can submit comments online until March 9.

The projects cover nearly every type of transportation.

“We have money allocated in there for transit, certainly road improvements, non-motorized improvements,” Lyon said. “We do stuff with traffic control signalization."

The majority of the more than 100 projects are dedicated to road improvements. Expanding areas of Minnesota drive and the Glenn Highway, as well as rehabilitating other roads to keep them safe.

“They don't want you to continue to build new infrastructure if you aren't taking care of the stuff you have," Lyon said.

The MTP also includes a number of non-motorized improvements. Sidewalks along A street from 13th down to Benson, several new bike lanes, and a widening of the Coastal Trail are just a few of the projects.

Lyon said the number of non-motorized projects has been steadily increasing with interest.

“There definitely is an increased emphasis on that in the last decade or so,” he said. “That's what we've been told the public wants. I mean when we do surveys, that's what they say they want."

Finally, the plan also includes funds for railroad and bus maintenance, but all of these projects, still subject to change, even after the plan is finalized.

“The ones that are in the short range, we're pretty sure that most of those are going to go,” Lyon said. “Long range, you know, we'll see when we get to another 4 years or another 8 years if we still have the funds to do those."
