ANN ARBOR, MI – Zoning changes to allow a potentially $50 million “solar farm” are headed to the Pittsfield Township Planning Commission for approval.
The commission will hold a public hearing and take up the city of Ann Arbor’s request for the city-owned site off Ellsworth and Stone School roads at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20.
The city is asking the township to OK an amendment to the approved “Swift Run PUD,” the planned unit development designation for the former landfill site.
“This project, known as the Ann Arbor Landfill Solar Project, is a roughly 24MW solar installation designed on the capped landfill, the open water behind the Wheeler Service Center, and on portions of the Planned Unit Development held between the Township of Pittsfield and the City of Ann Arbor,” a project background document states.
The city is working with DTE Energy to explore the potential for a mix of ground-mounted panels and floating panels on a pond behind the city’s maintenance facility.
The site was chosen because it has high solar potential, is directly abutting power lines, has minimal disruption to surrounding neighbors and can significantly help Ann Arbor and Pittsfield Township achieve their goals of powering municipal operations with 100% clean and renewable energy, the project background document states.
“The entire development is projected to cover around 80 acres – this includes space for the photovoltaic panels as well as all supporting equipment,” the document states.
Plans submitted by the city show five different areas where the panels would go, including a 35-acre “Solar A” array south of the city’s maintenance facility, plus a five-acre “Solar B” array and a 25-acre “Solar C” array nearby.
“Solar A” and “Solar B” would be located on two maintained grassland areas separated by a former railroad, where there’s hay production and some trees.
“Solar C” would be on a field that’s predominantly used to grow corn.
Just to the east of the maintenance facility, the plans show a 12.2-acre “Solar D” floating array, plus an 11-acre ground-mounted array that’s also labeled “Solar D.”
