Joliet plans to send council members, staff and unnamed stakeholders to Kansas to look over NorthPoint Development's business park there.
The proposal goes to the Joliet Plan Commission for a vote on Feb. 24 and could go to the full Joliet City Council on March 17.
Meanwhile, the Just Say No to NorthPoint opposition to the project is holding town meetings on the plan Monday at Wilson Creek Elementary School, 25440 S. Gougar Road, Manhattan, and March 5 in the Knights of Columbus Hall at 100 S. 129th Infantry Drive in Joliet. Both meetings start at 6 p.m. with an open house followed by presentations at 7 p.m.
The City Council discussed travel plans to NorthPoint's Logistics Park Kansas City in Edgerton, Kansas, at its meeting Tuesday.
"I think it's important that this is not just an arranged tour that we see what someone wants us to see," Mayor Bob O'Dekirk said.
Interim City Manager Steve Jones said the city will be making arrangements with NorthPoint but also have independence on the trip.
"I see this as being somewhat orchestrated because we do have to have access but something where we'll also be able to do our own research," Jones said.
Joliet officials plan to meet with local elected officials in Edgerton during the visit.
The city also plans to invite "stakeholders" to join council members and staff, Jones said.
"After we get (travel) dates scheduled, I'm going to reach out to community stakeholders," he said Friday.
Jones would not say what stakeholders he will contact but said he did not intend to invite representatives from Just Say No to NorthPoint.
"I'm talking about people who would be affiliated with organizations," he said. "Just Say No to NorthPoint is not a Joliet organization."
Stephanie Irvine with Just Say No to NorthPoint said the group expects a large showing at the Monday meeting based on responses to a Facebook posting.
"It's certainly generating a lot of interest," Irvine said.
