Shawano Works On Virtual Education Plan

SHAWANO, WI – The Shawano School Board called an emergency meeting Friday to go over details of staff compensation, school meals, virtual learning and calendar updates before closing face-to-face classes for a month.

The District plans to offer an education process for students in order to keep the education going while students are away.

Superintendent Randi Anderson explained the reason behind choosing to close for one month and said it was based mostly off of their existing district calendar.

“As we looked at everything and being aware of the safety of our community and where our Easter break fell, we felt it was in our best interest to go to the April 12th date.

Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Kelley Strike says while students are out of the classroom, they want to find ways to engage the students.

“Whatever we can do to keep the learning going as much as we can will be our goal.”

That will be done through online lessons and they plan to use Google Classroom as a primary platform.

While they don’t have all the details figured out, Strike said the day would follow a more condensed model and shorter school days.

“We are looking at 3 hours for Middle School and High School, 2 hours for grades 2 through 5 and 1 hour per day for grades 4K-1st.”

The District used models created by other school districts and some state examples.

“We know that we probably will not be able to access every student and there will be challenges for students and staff when it comes to WIFI,” said Stike.

For that reason, she said the outcome of what the students are able to complete while away will not play a factor in their overall grade.

“We are aware that some students may only be able to get to the internet once or twice a week and families will have to juggle their schedules to make that happen.”

In addition, the district plans to use their 1-to-1 abilities and have students use Chromebooks while away.

“Our Middle School and High School students already have access to devices, but our younger kids don’t, so we hope to find a way to get those to the students within the next couple of weeks.”

Strike says 4K and Kindergarten students will not be doing their work in the same digital way, but instead, teachers are providing material to use that was sent home Friday.

“Grade 1 will be that in between with digital and materials that were sent home,” Stike added.

With this process, Strike told the board that teachers are expected to be available for communication through email or other methods that they set up and daily activities will be assigned, but there is an understanding that students will do their best to participate and complete activities.

“I don’t want staff to be in the building,” said Board Member Mart Grams. “If they can’t be here because they might get sick, I don’t want them here because they might get sick.”

The plan is to put the virtual education process in place no earlier than April 1, which gives the district time to get everyone set up, and also accounts for a break during the originally scheduled Spring Break week of March 23-March 27.

The school is also providing information from companies that are offering to supply families with temporary free internet access for the students while they are away from the classroom.

Strike said the process will not include activities that students with poor internet access would not be able to complete. She said an example of that is not having students watch a 20-minute video.

Note: School District Administration says while they plan to act quickly and diligently to get students prepared for the next month, more decisions need to be made. They ask parents to be patient and flexible and continue to look for updates on how they should proceed from here since no plans are officially in place.

Superintendent Randi Anderson explains how they made their decisions and what parents need to know.

SCHOOL LUNCHES

The Shawano School District is working out a way to provide students access to breakfast and lunch during this period. School Superintendent Randi Anderson says they are working out the details.

“That is one of our biggest priorities that students still have food for breakfast and lunch.”

Nothing has been put in place yet, but it would likely involve getting students access to a bagged meal.

“We would make sure however we do it that there is very little interaction between individuals in the process.”

She says some ideas are to have assigned times for students to come to pick up meals in order to limit how many people are gathered at one time, or have different pickup locations. The district is also looking into if delivery is an option.

Once plans are made, information will be sent to parents through normal communication methods and also posted on the Shawano High School Website.

Anderson told the board that it might take a little bit yet to get that plan into action.
