Metro Nashville Schools reopening plan: What we know so far - Tennessean

Metro Nashville Public Schools notified parents and families this week of two options for returning to school this fall: in-person classes or remote learning.

The information came after Director of Schools Adrienne Battle addressed the Board of Education on Tuesday, updating board members on feedback the district received from parent and staff surveys and the evolution of Metro Schools' reopening framework.

The district tried to gauge parent interest in three options: in-person classes at school, online remote learning or a hybrid of both, which would include staggering student schedules between learning in the classroom and at home.

Despite interest in a hybrid model, parents were notified that they must choose between remote learning or sending their children back to school completely.

Here are some of what we know so far.

When are schools scheduled to start back up?

The first day of class for Metro Nashville Public Schools is Tuesday, August 4.

What are my options as a parent?

Nashville families can choose to send their child back to school in-person for the fall semester or opt to keep them at home and participate in virtual learning.

Metro Schools is requiring families to make a decision for the entire fall semester in order to staff both in-person and remote programs. Students who physically go to school will attend for a normal five-day school week.

If I pick the virtual option, will I get to stay with my child's current school?

Students who choose virtual learning will still be tied to the school they would have attended if they were going in-person, district officials said Friday. However, the district has not clarified if this applies to all schools — traditional neighborhood or zoned schools, magnet schools or other choice options.

If I choose to send my child to school, will they have to wear a mask?

Metro Schools has not said if it will require students to wear masks or how schools would enforce social distancing protocols, but Battle did say in an email that schools will be "providing personal protective equipment such as masks and sanitizer stations and enforcing social distancing whenever possible to reduce the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19."

What about sports and other extracurricular activities?

In-person extracurricular options, including sports, will still be an option for students who pick virtual learning over an in-person classroom.

What if my child doesn't have a laptop or internet access at home?

Mayor John Cooper pledged to purchase 90,000 netbooks and 17,000 mobile internet hotspots for Metro Nashville students, but the devices are unlikely to arrive in time for the first day of school.

The district has not released a plan yet for how and when devices will be deployed, but Battle told board members the priority will be given to those students who choose remote learning or do not otherwise have access to technology at home.

My child has functional needs and/or an IEP? How will the district provide services?

The district has not yet said how it plans to accommodate students with functional needs and those who need additional support, but Battle has appointed a committee, "Supporting All Learners," to ensure the district is meeting the needs of all students.

Some parents have also received information from the Metro Schools Department of Exceptional Education notifying them that the department will work with families to review the impact school closures have had on students and "appropriate next steps."
