PEORIA (WEEK) - Peoria Public School officials say they are reviewing Governor JB Pritzker's guidance, but their plan already includes most of it.
On Tuesday, Governor Pritzker announced schools are able to resume in the fall under new guidelines, requiring all teachers, staff and students to wear face coverings, prohibiting more than 50 people in one space, require social distancing and screenings for symptoms as well as temperature checks and increasing cleaning in schools.
PPS board member, Chase Klaus, says Pritzker's announcement gives the board the freedom to pursue their own plan as they see fit.
"There's still a lot of work that we have to sit down and talk to community members, talk to local businesses. But I know my primary concern is to get as much in person class time as possible," said Klaus.
Monday night, PPS voted to go with a blended model of in person and remote learning when kids return to school. Board members say they are sticking with that plan, regardless of Governor Pritzker approving being in person 5 days a week.
School board member and PPS parent, Greg Wilson, says he is not comfortable sending his kids back full time yet, and prefers PPS's model.
"This blended learning model that we have set forth for the district, am I comfortable with that? Yes," said Wilson.
However, some parents are still questioning how schools will enforce children to wear masks.
"Obviously, you explain it to a first grader differently than you explain it to a junior or senior in high school. It's a teachable moment just like anything. Our teachers can handle explaining that to the kids," said Klaus.
Governor Pritzker added schools should be prepared to switch back to remote learning, in case of a spike. Klaus feels PPS teachers have nearly mastered remote teaching.
"You'll really start seeing the expertise of our teachers as they start applying their in class stuff to the online world," said Klaus.
Board members say the plan is something they will continue to revise up until the first day of classes.
