NCAA to approve 6-week plan to start college football season on time, per reports - AL.com

The NCAA is expected to approve a plan with the idea of starting the upcoming football season on time, according to multiple reports.

According to a 247Sports report, the NCAA’s Football Oversight Committee has prepared a four-phase plan. Included in that plan are six weeks of mandatory workouts with preseason camp starting in early August.

In addition, college football coaches could interact with players in the second week of July, according to Sports Illustrated.

The NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee is expected to approve the plan Thursday, per SI. The plan would need final approval from the D-I Council, which plans to meet June 17.

“We’re 90 percent there,” Shane Lyons, the West Virginia athletic director and chair of the Oversight Committee, told Sports Illustrated on Monday.

Schedule proposal to start football season

NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee is expected to approve the long-talked-about six-week preseason practice plan and recommend it to the NCAA D-I Council.

The July 13 start date is for teams playing Labor Day Weekend, which would include Alabama and Auburn. Teams playing in Week 0 will move the dates up one week.

The draft of the plan is here.

Here are the dates for the proposed preseason:

  • Voluntary workouts: June 1-25 (virtual instruction 8 hours per week)
  • Mandatory workouts: 25 days prior to first preseason practice date (likely July 13)
  • Meetings and walk-throughs: 14 days before first preseason practice date (likely July 24)
  • Preseason practices: 29 days before first game (likely Aug. 7)

Also on Monday, the Oversight Committee released a statement regarding unchanged fall championships.

“After review of the conference survey feedback and based on the information currently available, the Competition Oversight Committee’s position on fall championships remains unchanged," Lynda Tealer, committee chair and Florida athletics director for administration said. "The plan at this time is to keep the same formats, the same timelines and the same previously determined sites for fall championships. This approach is consistent with what we heard from the membership in terms of current planning. We continue to acknowledge the ongoing uncertainty about the spread of the virus and the different actions and approaches states are taking to address it may cause modifications to be made to the playing and practice seasons and the championships as matters progress. Further, we will remain nimble to react to a fluid and unpredictable environment in ways that protect the health, safety and well-being of student-athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators.”
