If there is baseball in 2019-20, it might all happen in Southern California.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the recent spikes in coronavirus cases nationwide have baseball reconsidering playing all of its games in one region similar to the plans in place for restarting the NBA and the NHL. The NBA is playing the entirety of its restart in Orlando, while the NHL will select two hub cities that will each host one conference’s playoff.
WSJ reporter Jared Diamond, who was one of two reporters who wrote the story, tweeted:
“Eleven players on 40-man rosters from seven teams have tested positive for coronavirus since June 5. The rise in cases could force baseball to reconsider the “bubble” plan to have a season in 2020, with Southern California seen as a possible site.”
From the Wall Street Journal report:
“This person familiar with baseball’s thinking said that MLB could look at Southern California as a potential site. The region has three MLB stadiums—Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Angel Stadium in Anaheim and Petco Park in San Diego—as well as several colleges with quality ballparks. It’s still unclear whether the “bubble” plan will become serious enough for the league to broach with the union.”
The working plan for baseball presently is to have each team play at its home park. The leagues would be replaced by three divisions on 10 teams to limit travel:
East Division: New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins.
Central Division: Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers.
West Division: Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners.
Initially MLB was considering a bubble in Florida, Arizona or both.
Of course baseball might not play anywhere in 2020. The owners and Major League Baseball Players Association have been unable to come to an agreement on how many games the season will be and how much the players will be paid.
