Culbertson Hospital plans $15.4M renovation - Jacksonville Journal-Courier

RUSHVILLE — Sarah D. Culbertson Memorial Hospital’s board of directors has approved a $15.4 million plan to renovate the hospital’s interior.

The plan includes an expansion and renovation of the hospital’s emergency department, centrally locating and expanding laboratory services, creating a cancer center and expanding other services.

Renovations will be done in six phases and are expected to be completed in February 2027.

The first phase will be a renovation of the hospital’s west wing, followed by laboratory services, the main entrance and patient access.

The hospital’s board of directors approved the project Nov. 20, voting 9-0 vote to approve the facility plan and to authorize the administration to move forward with the first phase.

“The master facility plan represents a strategic investment in our hospital and our community, board President Greg Snyder said. “The facility improvements established in this plan allow us to expand services to the community and help ensure the long-term viability of Culbertson Memorial Hospital. The plan will be implemented in stages to provide flexibility of design and to maximize financial utilization. In the vastly changing world of health care, this plan is a tremendous positive for … Rushville and the surrounding communities.”

CEO John E. Kessler said that, during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, “we have learned where some of our vulnerabilities lie and, through this project, we can turn our vulnerabilities into opportunities to improve how health care is delivered in Schuyler County and the surrounding area.”

Outpatient specialty clinics were identified as one of the biggest needs.

“We currently have a lack of space to bring in the additional specialty care providers the community needs,” Kessler said. “We will also be able to create negative-pressure rooms, which are vital to addressing airborne viruses.”

Construction is anticipated to begin in July and be completed in February 2027. Phase 1 includes west wing renovation; Phase 2 focuses on laboratory services, the main entrance and patient access; Phase 3 is an expansion of the emergency department; Phase 4 includes centralizing imaging services; Phase 5 will concentrate on the patient wing; and Phase 6 will expand surgical services.

“The health care needs of our community have changed over the last decade, as more and more services have been pushed to the outpatient environment. While we are decreasing the total inpatient beds to 12, we feel the other changes we are making are truly what this community needs from us going forward,” Kessler said. “These new patient rooms will be consistent with the accommodations you see in newer hospitals today and will be much more comfortable and create a healing environment for our patients.

The hospital marks its 100th anniversary in February.
