RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Democratic Presidential Candidate Pete Buttigieg has released his plan ‘Coming Home: An Agenda for Housing Justice in America.’
The former South Bend Mayor says the plan will help tackle America’s housing crisis. It addresses the following: expanding access to affordable housing, reversing the exclusion of people of color from homeownership, ending the criminalization of homelessness, and encouraging cities and states to improve housing affordability.
The plan also calls for reversing the wrongs of the 2008 housing crisis, by establishing strong consumer protections.
KOLO 8 News Now spoke with Buttigieg during a veterans event in Reno Monday.
“Housing is more than just having a roof over our heads–it is a place to call our own, a source of dignity and security, and an opportunity to build wealth over generations. Yet too many Americans, especially people of color, have been locked out of homeownership and opportunity,” said Buttigieg. “As President, my administration will use housing policy at every level of government as a tool to address the injustices done to reverse the discriminatory impacts of racist redlining, solve homelessness, and expand affordable housing nationwide while rebalancing the economy back in favor of American families.”
Here are some goals of the plan:
- Unlock access to safe and healthy affordable housing for over 7 million American families, starting by supporting the construction or renovation of over 2 million rental units.
- Increase homeownership for over 1 million low-income households.
- Prevent the concentration of housing ownership stock in a small number of Wall Street hedge funds and private equity funds.
- Strengthen the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau and vigorously enforce consumer protections in the mortgage lending market.
- Combat discrimination and predatory practices in housing and housing finance.
- Solve chronic and unsheltered homelessness, and rapidly end all homelessness for families with children, youth, and veterans.
- Expand housing assistance to nearly 5 million more families with children.
- Prevent evictions and increase stability for families, including by establishing a federal eviction fund to stabilize families and communities and expanding access to legal counsel for those experiencing eviction .
- Ensure safe, healthy, and stable housing for residents, including by eliminating lead hazards through a $100 billion Lead Hazard Mitigation Fund.
Buttigieg says if he were to be elected President, families across the country will have greater access to affordable housing.
