Proposed plan could transform Brook Park’s community hub - cleveland.com

BROOK PARK, Ohio -- Brook Park Recreation Director Mark Elliott on Feb. 11 shared with City Council a proposed improvement plan to transform multiple areas near City Hall and the recreation center.

He presented an architect's rendering that shows additions and upgrades to various outdoor sites located by the public library, police station, Kennedy Field and Brook Park Memorial Elementary School. The improvement area is bordered by Engle Road, Holland Road, Sylvia Drive and Interstate 71.

If all changes eventually are made, the new city center will be quite impressive.

“As a result of the 2019 agreement between the City of Brook Park and the Berea City School District, the city soon will take ownership of two school buildings and approximately 28 acres of property,” Elliott explained during council caucus.

“It seems like a pretty good time to talk about improving the largest gathering place for our families, friends and neighbors. Our residents deserve that.”

At the direction of Mayor Mike Gammella, Elliott and his staff developed a master plan, which he described as "a work in progress."

"We want everybody to start thinking about all this property and how best we can improve it," Elliott said. "Share your ideas with the mayor's office or contact me. Any feedback we can get from the people that live in our town, the better. Your input is what we want more than anything."

New amenities included in the proposed plan are an amphitheater, increased green space, an improved tree canopy (already in process through a grant), a water fountain, new basketball courts, a splash pad, pickleball and sand volleyball courts, expanded parking, an all-weather field, walking trails, miniature golf and even a self-service post office.

“Nobody says we have to do these things all at once,” Elliott stressed, acknowledging the budget challenges the city faces annually. “But if there is some commitment we can make to do a little bit every year … that would be an outstanding thing.”

Grants will be pursued, he added, to help fund some of the new amenities, for which a list of itemized costs will be developed.

"I think this is something that is going to reinvent Brook Park," Councilman Ed Orcutt told Elliott. "This has got to be a big priority for us."
