An intercept on my radio telescope:
In a galaxy far, far way, in a land known as America, a fierce conflict is waging between Trumponia and Pelosis.
Trumponians see America in rapid decline, its streets filled with rioters and looters, rape and murder. A transgender-led liberal permissive society presides over a culture of sexual and moral depravity. Trumponia’s television stations daily broadcast stories of Marxist leftists, formerly known as Democrats, parading in the streets allegedly in the name of anti-racism but with a real goal of collectivizing the economy and confiscating guns. Nothing can stop them as the police have been disarmed and defunded. These radicals view Thomas Jefferson and George Washington as dissolute slaveholders, their statues to be thrown in the Potomac along with great Confederate heroes. A pandemic and failing economy are sidebars. The only way to rescue America from the radicals is for the president to be reelected and given unlimited executive power. Only he can fix it; all means are justified.
In Pelosis the news is of a society faltering from the impact of a coronavirus, leading to death and illness, high unemployment, failing businesses and looming evictions – in a country home to the planet’s greatest medical scientists. Why cannot America control this disease as other advanced nations have? Pelosians blame an ignorant, science-rejecting president and an incompetent Cabinet. Acknowledging an increase in crime, they see it as the result of the pandemic, unemployment, rampant gun culture, poverty, prejudice and neglect. They have hope that America is coming to grips with its legacy of racism: monuments that stood for white supremacy are being removed. They believe that police reform is necessary for national reconciliation. They understand American history not as a triumphal pageant of democracy, but, as with all nations, a story of both great achievement and abysmal failure. If new leadership is not installed, Pelosians fear that America will succumb to authoritarianism, its democracy buried with the virus’s casualties.
This apocalyptic contest will be decided in November.
