Fernley transportation plan emphasizes roundabout, road improvements, bike lanes - Reno Gazette Journal

Fernley’s first-ever master transportation plan has some big goals for road and pedestrian improvements in the city.

Presented to the Fernley City Council Wednesday night for review by Reno-based Kimley-Horn, the plan includes expanding the city’s roundabout, constructing multi-use paths throughout the city, extending bicycle lanes and constructing park-and-ride facilities.

The goals of the transportation plan are to “forecast future transportation needs and define corresponding infrastructure for capital improvement programming” and to “understand the impact of proposed developments on the city’s transportation network.”

The plan includes data from the Nevada Department of Transportation, including high-crash areas and accident reports for the city.

According to NDOT, the city’s highest crash-rate areas are the Main Street/Farm District Road roundabout; the intersection of US50A and Nevada Pacific Parkway; and Main Street and US 95A south.

According to NDOT, the city saw 184 accidents in 2015, with two fatalities; 190 accidents in 2016, with one fatality; and 201 accidents in 2017, with one fatality. There were also five bicycle/vehicle crashes during that three-year period.

Proposals in the transportation plan to address accidents, traffic and other transportation needs include NDOT-funded projects such as:

  • Reconfiguring the city’s roundabout at a cost of $5.2-$7.4 million
  • Widening the railroad underpass on Main Street between Pilot Road and Miller Lane at a cost of $23.3 million
  • Extending bicycle lanes, crosswalks and pedestrian signals downtown at a cost of $443,000. This includes upgrading 10 existing crosswalks with additional signage and construction to crossings along Main Street with flashing lights.

Proposed city-funded projects include:

  • A 50-space park-and-ride transit facility at a cost of $400,000
  • Extending the Farm District Road multi-use path to US 50A at a cost of $1.1 million
  • Paving Desert Shadows Lane and providing a multi-use path at a cost of $14.8 million.

The transportation master plan also sites a need for repaving along Newlands Drive and Hardie, Shadow, Miller and Cottonwood lanes.

The city council will review and potentially approve the plan at a July meeting. A copy of the transportation plan can be found at cityoffernley.org.
