Idaho's Career & Technical Education State Plan Approved by the U.S. Department of Education - bigcountrynewsconnection.com

BOISE - On Friday, June 12, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced the approval of Idaho’s career and technical education (CTE) plan, along with plans for eight other states. This means Idaho will receive nearly $7.6 million in federal funds for fiscal year 2021 to improve academic and technical achievement for CTE students, strengthen connections between Idaho’s secondary and postsecondary education and improve accountability.

The bipartisan Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) was signed into law by President Donald J. Trump on July 31, 2018.

“This approval is the culmination of a year and half of outreach and consultation by Division staff with a wide-variety of stakeholders,” said Idaho Career and Technical Education (ICTE) Administrator Clay Long. “Idaho’s plan provides increased funds for rural and remote districts, reduces the number of waivers needed from districts, and the ability for districts to utilize funds in expanding program offerings, among many others. Perkins funded projects is one way Idaho CTE continues to focus expanding opportunities and access to secondary and postsecondary students across the state of Idaho. We have greatly appreciated the collaboration, input, and feedback we received as we prepared Idaho’s State Plan.”

“Thanks to the president’s leadership, the new career and technical education law gives local leaders the flexibility to make investments in the highest impact areas of local need,” Secretary DeVos said. “We know many well-paying, in-demand jobs require CTE training but not necessarily a college degree and the associated debt. The coronavirus pandemic has certainly highlighted the need for all education to be tailored to meet each student’s unique needs, more nimble, and relevant to 21st-century realities. High-quality CTE programs are a critical way to help learners of all ages and get our economy back up and running at full speed.”

Idaho’s Perkins V State Plan was first approved by the Idaho State Board of Education on March 16, 2020, and later endorsed by Idaho Governor Brad Little. The purpose of the State Plan is to increase learner access to high-quality CTE programs of study, with a focus on assisting rural and remote districts, systems alignment, and program improvement
