WISCONSIN (WQOW) - Just like us, animals are eager to get out and enjoy these spring-like temperatures. Black bears are among those that call the Chippewa Valley home, and as it warms up they are coming out of hibernation.
As exciting or thrilling as it is to see a bear, it certainly can't hurt to know what to do if you encounter one. When it comes to the black bears that inhabit Wisconsin, most are just as afraid of us are we might be of them, according to Randy Johnson, a large carnivore specialist with the state DNR.
If you see one while out in nature, Johnson said don't turn and run, instead it's best to make your presence known through a bear bell, calmly speaking or raising your arms up high before slowly backing away. Though, Johnson does note, most black bears like to keep away from people so if they see you they will likely run away.
"We really just don't see really any attacks in the state here, they're very very rare," Johnson said. "Black bears are generally just want to be left alone and do their thing and they're pretty docile, but they deserve respect. They are certainly capable of a lot."
Johnson said black bears will sometimes become comfortable with humans if they know there is a chance for food, so to keep them away from your home, make sure your trash is secure and your grill is clean and stored inside when you're not using it.
