A look at how Mississippi colleges plan to reopen this fall amid COVID pandemic - Clarion Ledger

Colleges and universities across Mississippi will return o campus for the fall 2020 semester. Here's a roundup of how colleges and universities in Mississippi plan to resume classes and reopening plans.

Alcorn State University

  • Reopening plan: The university plans to start classes in person in August. However, the university will begin fall 2020 classes on Aug. 17 and end regular instruction on Nov. 24. Final exams will be administered remotely so that students do not have to return to campus after Nov. 24. 
  • Fall classes resume: Aug. 17

Belhaven University

  • Reopening plan:  The university will offer three modalities to meet your needs: one night a week ground “face-to-face” courses; virtual video conferencing classes also meeting one night a week; and fully flexible “anytime anywhere” online courses.
  • Fall classes resume: Aug. 24

Delta State University

  • Reopening plan: The university plans to start classes in person in August and the fall semester will end at Thanksgiving break. The campus will still have in-person classes that will be set up to adhere to social distancing requirements. Masks are required for all students, faculty and staff. Students will be provided with refillable hand sanitizer key rings and will be required to view a health and safety training video.
  • Fall classes resume: Aug. 17 

Jackson State University

  • Reopening plan: The university plans to resume classes in person in August. Jackson State will utilize a hybrid approach, integrating face-to-face and online course instructional delivery. Students, faculty and staff are expected to display their JSU ID card, wear a mask, engage in social distancing. Students who attend class on-campus will have assigned seating to improve the tracing program. Screenings are also required before entry into classrooms. To check temperatures, check-in stations will be placed in certain locations throughout campus.

Colleges and universities: Mississippi universities plan to reopen campuses in fall

Millsaps College

  • Reopening plan: The college plans to resume classes in-person in August. In-class time blocks will reduce by 10 minutes at the end to provide a total of 20 minutes between class times. Faculty will distribute sanitizing wipes to each student at the conclusion of each class and students will wipe down their desk or work space. Face masks will be provided and are required for students, faculty, staff and visitors. In-person classes will end on Nov. 24 then resume after Thanksgiving break (Nov. 25-27). Fall exams will be administered from Dec. 7-15.
  • Fall classes resume: Aug. 24

Mississippi College

  • Reopening plan: Face masks or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals (faculty, staff, students, and visitors) in all buildings on the MC campus. 
  • Fall classes resume: Aug. 17

Mississippi State University

  • Reopening plan: The University plans to return to full campus operations and in-person instruction in August 2020. The University will implement screening, testing, and contact tracing. All residential students will be required to complete a temperature screening every 24 hours along with the self-reported health questionnaire. All non-residential students are strongly encouraged to complete a temperature screening and health questionnaire daily.
  • All employees will be required to conduct a self-screening daily prior to coming to work. This should include an “at home” temperature check and a review of potential symptoms of COVID-19 including cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, and a new loss of taste or smell.
  • Fall classes resume: Aug. 17

Tougaloo College

  • Reopening plan: The college plans to start classes in-person in September but will begin online classes in August. Face covering will be worn in all community spaces by all students, faculty, staff, administrators and visitors. Any person entering Tougaloo facilities are required to wash their hands and also before exiting.  Classes will end on Nov. 10 and final exams will be administered Nov. 12-18.
  • Fall classes resume: Virtual courses begin Aug. 6 and in-person classes resume Sept. 8

University of Mississippi

  • Reopening plan: The University plans to resume classes in person in August.  The last day of classes will be on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Final exams will be administered on Nov. 18-20 and Nov. 23-24. Students will be required to wear face masks or cloth face coverings in all classrooms, hallways, auditoriums, instructional spaces, laboratories, common areas, shared spaces and restrooms. Faculty, staff and students will be required to use the university’s COVID-19 Daily Symptom Checker to assist in self-monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Fall classes resume: Aug. 24

University of Southern Mississippi

  • Reopening plan: The University plans to resume classes in person in August. The last day of instruction will be on Monday, Nov. 23. Semester exams will be conducted online, beginning on Monday, Nov. 30, and concluding on Thursday, Dec. 3. USM is implementing plans for faculty and staff to begin returning to campuses in a phased approach, that began in early June and continuing into mid-July in preparation for the fall semester.
