Pending a school board vote of approval, the Nazareth Area School District’s initial plan to return to schools will be totally reworked.
Back in July, the school district released a plan to allow students to make a full return to school while following safety protocols to protect students and faculty against the coronavirus. But as the ever-changing COVID-19 guidelines from the state now mandate a hybrid learning format at minimum, NASD Superintendent Dennis Riker revamped the plan to incorporate that format for the upcoming school year. It was presented at a school board meeting on Tuesday evening.
The plan, which recommends a blended-learning model, is generally universal from kindergarten up to 12th grade, though times and schedules vary from grade to grade. Mondays will be considered office hours for teachers, while Tuesday through Friday will see students divided into remote and in-class learning. On Tuesday and Thursday, students with last names starting with A through K will report to school and L through Z will participate in remote learning. On Wednesday and Friday, the groups will switch.
Students are able to choose a fully online option of learning.
When school starts on Aug. 31, students will attend school in person for half-days to adapt and understand the new schedule. Grades will attend in their last name-designated group on alternating days for the first week, or just one day in some cases. The following week, the new schedule will be implemented.

According to WFMZ, the plan naturally raised some questions — more than 100 of them, to be specific.
The board will vote on the plan at the next school board meeting, Aug. 18.
