Jersey City school district releases re-opening plan. Here’s what you need to know - NJ.com

After months of planning, the Jersey City school district released an 81-page reopening plan Thursday, laying out how students and staff will return to school next month.

The district’s students will be brought back to the classroom in phases, which will change based on coronavirus statistics in the city. The district will start the school year on Sept. 10 with a hybrid model of in-person instruction and remote learning.

But not all children will return to school buildings, as more than half of Jersey City parents said in a district survey that they do not plan to send their children back for in-person instruction.

Parents can officially opt out of in-person instruction over the next few weeks but will have to commit to a remote learning plan for at least the first marking period.

Students who do return for in-person instruction will be split into three groups (A, B and C). Each group will receive five days of in-school instruction, while the other two groups do remote learning. The result will be students getting in-person learning every every three weeks.

Students who return to school for in-person instruction will be required to stay six feet apart in classrooms and on buses, while teachers will be required to wear masks, per state Department of Education guidelines.

Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday announced that the state would now mandate kids wear masks “at all times” in schools, including when social distancing.

According to the district’s reopening plan, however, children would not be required to wear masks when social distancing. It is unclear if the district’s plan will be updated to comply with the DOE’s guidance.

The district will have signage throughout schools reminding students to maintain social distancing and wear mask as they move throughout the buildings. Sanitizer stations will be available at entrances, in classrooms, conferences, hallways and in high traffic areas.

All sanitizers and soap dispensers will be reviewed hourly by the custodial response team to make sure they are full.

Children who take buses will sit one per seat leaving alternate rows empty, but siblings will be allowed to sit together. Approximately 11 students will be permitted on a 54-passenger school bus, according to the plan.

While face coverings will be provided, parents should send their child with a face covering.

The district will also roll out a mobile app that will require staff and students to answer questions daily before heading to school facilities. Based on the immediate results, they will know if they are clear to attend class or return to work.

Before attending school, students and staff must not have had a fever for 24 hours without medication.

Meals, which will be either individually plated or in prepackaged boxes and bags, will be served in classrooms or outside when possible. High school classes will end at 1 p.m., but grab and go meals will be available for them to take home.

Classrooms with sinks will encourage frequent hand washing as the day goes on. While other students in classes with no sinks will be taken to the lavatories routinely to wash hands. Only two people will be allowed in the restrooms at a time.

As for cleaning, the district will develop a schedule for increased routine cleaning and disinfecting, including frequently touched places like light switches, door knobs, desks and chairs. The district also is vetting ultra-violet light technology and hydrogen peroxide mobile units to be part of the cleaning process.
